WHERE TO START
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” Lau Tzu
So many people wish to be fitter, healthier and thinner but what separates the achievers from the wishers ?
1. PURPOSE : YOUR WHY ?
You have been told countless times that exercise is good for you and its true – but its good for a lot more than just losing weight. Think about why YOU would like to embark on this journey of health and wellness…
is it mental vitality , confidence, de-stressing, better sleep ? When you know your ‘WHY’ and it is important enough to you, it will be a lot easier to stay motivated and stick to your plan.
2. ARE YOU PREPARED TO MAKE THE SACRIFICE ?
As with any commitment, to be successful in achieving your desired goal there will be sacrifice. We are very good at making sacrifices for work, family, religion and others …
now is the time for you to make sacrifices for yourself!
3. THE DECISION
Our emotions, behaviour and habits follow our thoughts. Everything we think, positive or negative will directly impact our emotional and physical response. The good news – we control our thoughts!!!! Instead of wishing for change, take ownership, make a strong positive decision to change.
4. THINK POSITIVE
Your thoughts are going to set the tone and your mood for the day. Remember thinking positive is a decision, it won’t happen on its own… you have to make sure your thoughts are positive and motivational. For example, Instead of waking up thinking ahhh I don’t feel like this, I don’t want to get out of bed, you can consciously change your thinking to … “I am going to have a great session and feel so much better when it’s done because I’ve made a decision, I have purpose and I’m prepared to make the sacrifice”.
5. MOTIVATION – KNOW WHAT YOU LOVE
What activity have you enjoyed in the past?
What makes you feel happy and excited?
Not everybody is a runner, a boxer or a belly dancer, find something that resonates with your happy self.
Researchers in London have found that those who were motivated to work out because it makes them feel good were more likely to continue with their routine as opposed to those who were driven by the end result of losing weight or gaining approval of others. Getting fit and healthy is a personal journey and if you are looking for outside validation you will invariably be disappointed.
The primary reason you will stick to your new health and fitness regime will be because you LOVE it.
6. SECRET OF SUCCESS – WHAT PEOPLE DON’T TELL YOU!!
It’s a life long journey – GO SLOW !!
The most prevalent reason for failure to stick with the plan in the first month is that you get frustrated and demotivated because you start too hard or too fast. It is not necessary and is in fact counterproductive to push so hard in your first week .
Don’t push till you’re exhausted and can’t walk without looking like you have a carrot up your butt!
I highly recommend that you start really easy and only twice a week for the first few weeks and slowly build on that. Rather feel great … wanting more than hating it and dreading your next session.
So start moving and have fun until next time when we will discuss setting goals and planning your journey.
